The Grappler Could Replace Pit Maneuvers in Tri-Cities

Somewhere, somebody decided it would work if casting a fishing pole line were merged with tech to stop a fleeing suspect in a vehicle...the Grappler was born!

Invented in 2016 Following a Fatal Pursuit Crash

Leonard Stock developed what is known now as The Grappler, he'd been watching a fatal car pursuit on TV, which ended with a pit manuever. He thought there had to be a better way.

The Grappler is a sturdy metal frame that attaches to the front of a Law Enforcement vehicle, kind of like how tow frames are in the back. The unit deploys a net at distances of up to 100 feet, snares a wheel on the vehicle, usually the left or drive wheel, and then the Patrol car brings them to a halt.

Is the Grappler Safer than Pit Maneuver?

It's considered safer than spinning out a suspect, because at high speed that can result (sometimes) in disaster. Benton County Sheriff's Officials told KEPR-TV recently that each time a Grappler is used, the catch net has to be replaced, but that's far cheaper then fixing damage to a patrol car or other property.

Thurston County WA uses them, as do a handful of other agencies. Benton County will continue to test and refine the system, and it will be added to more patrol vehicles. They will evaluate the progress. At first, Sheriff Mike Clark was a little skeptical, as he should have been, but after watching it and seeing it used successfully, the BCSO is on board.
