Convicted Sex Offender Dies in Umatilla Prison
The inmate's earliest possible release date would have been in 2025, so he still had a lot of time left behind bars.
Two Rivers Correctional Institution officials said Tuesday convicted sex offender 72-year-old David Purcell died at 4:15am.
He was found unresponsive, and was taken offsite for medical care, but could not be revived. He was serving convictions out of Clackamas County stemming from 1999 convictions of sodomy and sexual penetration. His earliest release date would have been July 2025.
Officials did not know cause of death, and per prison policy, all unexpected or unusual deaths are investigated. Officials have now begun that process. This includes people who die of apparent natural causes, such as Purcell.
Attempts to notify any relatives was unsuccessful. Three Rivers, which opened in 2000, houses about 1,800 inmates serving various sentences, and is located near Umatilla.
