A cougar has killed a dog near Ronald after the dog and it's owner came face to face with the cougar on a popular hiking trail. The owner said they encountered the cougar and her dog attacked because it was not on a leash. The woman left to go get help and when she returned the cougar and her dog were still fighting. The woman had got the help of a family friend that brought a gun and shot at the cougar. The cougar ran off but did not seem to be hit by a bullet according to news reports.

Fish and Wildlife were not able to find the cougar after the incident and later the dog died from it's injuries. Authorities want people to be careful when they are hiking, because bear and cougar sightings are not unusual this time of year.
