First the Cleveland Indians – What’s Next? The Nuts? (Possibly NSFW)
Wednesday it was announced the Cleveland Indians are reportedly going to be sued for $9 billion dollars over their Chief Wahoo logo. Previously, the Washington Redskins have been under fire for their logo as well.
While it's certainly understandable that certain groups are not always going to find favor with logos or portrayals of sports teams, we wonder when it's going to stop?
With tongue firmly in cheek, we can imagine a story like this coming out in the future:
"The American Men's Health Society has announced they are going to protest the mascot of the Modesto High A baseball franchise, because it's demeaning to men's testicles. The Health society plans to notify the Modesto Nuts they object to the use of the word "nut" and their logo, because it makes men feel sensitive about their verility and manhood.
The society plans a potential boycott outside the stadium later this season, when the club plans to stage it's nationally famous three-legged fan participation race, known as "The Nut Sack" Race." (any resemblance to an actual men's health organization is purely coincidental).
Of course, this is all a spoof. The Nuts, though, really do have a Nut Sack Race. They're the Long Class A farm team for the Colorado Rockies. When Dust Devil players get sent up, they usually go to High A Modesto, then continue up the ladder.
We're not saying people shouldn't have an opinion on mascot matters, or social issues. But to sue for $9 billion dollars? That seems a bit much. Regardless of who the mascot is, often times sports franchises seek the approval of said groups before adopting the figure as their mascot.
It will be interesting to see how these play out. Besides the Dust Devils Dusty hat, we think the Nuts hat is the COOLEST in Minor League Baseball, and I own one.
