Fred Meyer Fined for Illegally Selling Insurance in WA State
WA State Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler's office announced a $100K fine has been levied against Fred Meyer.
Company accused of selling insurance without certification
Between 2016 and 2022, Fred Meyer allegedly sold GUARD Protection Plans, issued by Mack Camera & Video Service. A consumer filed a complaint with the Insurance Commissioner's office over delays and misrepresentation. Mack makes a series of digital cameras and video products sold by Kroger and Fred Meyer.
The WIC Office said:
"The OIC determined that the GUARD plan, which Fred Meyer sold from June 2016 to November 2022, constitutes a service contract and insurance. The company received $40 from Mack Camera & Video Service per contract sold at Fred Meyer stores.
Service contract providers must register with Kreidler’s office to do business in Washington state. Fred Meyer is not licensed to sell insurance."
Fred Meyer was also given a cease-and-desist from further sales of any such policies. The chain has until July 30th to request a hearing in the matter.
