The video has been seen on YouTube nearly 85,000 times, and created a hotbed of discussion in and out of social media.  Now, the officer involved has resigned from the Kennewick police department.

The events began around April 7th, when a video of a Kennewick nighttime traffic stop was posted on YouTube.  The driver, along with two passengers, got into a heated discussion with the officer. The video quickly went viral on the internet.

The officer, Glenn Ball, was a 21-year-veteran of the department.  In the video the driver is heard making a reference to "traffic stop quotas," to which Ball heatedly responds. The two continue their verbal "discussion" for much of the 3-plus minutes captured on what is believed to be a cameraphone.  The discussion was very elevated and Ball was heard repeatedly swearing at the three occupants of the car.

Tuesday,  Kennewick police announced Officer Ball had turned in his resignation and was retiring effective immediately, according to a press release from the department.

Part of the release stated:

(Officer Ball) "realizes his conduct was not consistent with the core values of the Kennewick Police Department and regrets the negative impact on the department as well as our community."

Following the video being posted, the Kennewick police department had issued a statement April 8, which read in part:

"Since being made aware of the video, the Kennewick Police Department initiated an internal investigation of the officer involved in the incident. The video was posted on social media and we have viewed the video
Based on what we have seen in the video, the officer’s comments are not consistent with our values and are not consistent with our expectations of how our officers should interact with the public.”
The department had launched an investigation to determine if Ball, who remained on duty following the incident, had violated departmental policy.  However, authorities did not say if his resignation-retirement was a result of any findings from the internal investigation.
