Milton-Freewater Man Arrested for DUI After Damaging Cemetery Headstones
A Milton-Freewater man was arrested for suspicion of DUI after College Place Police say he smashed several headstones at a local cemetery.
The incident took place Tuesday afternoon at about 3 pm at Mt. Hope Cemetery at 700 Suncrest Terrace in College Place.
A witness reported they saw a man staggering around the grounds after exiting a vehicle.
After Police arrived, they made contact with the subject, 67-year old Mark Medina. Police say his vehicle left the roadway and struck several several headstones. Shortly after, Medina got out an wandered around the property. That's when the witness notified authorities.
After investigation, it appears that Medina's vehicle may have hit additional objects. The investigation is continuing.
Medina was taken into custody and booked at the Walla Walla County Jail. He's charged with Driving Under the Influence, Reckless Driving, and Hit and Run.
The management of Mt. Hope Cemetery is observing the damages and is contacting family members of the damaged headstones.
