Mexican Man Killed By Drug Cartel Over Social Media Comments
In a chilling example of how Mexican Drug Cartels are increasingly monitoring social media, looking for those who oppose or target them, police in Nuevo Laredo report finding the body of a man, minus his head.
This is reportedly the fourth such social media related killing. The man, who was the moderator of a website used by the city to alert citizens to dangerous drug or criminal activity, to gather tips on criminals, gather comments from citizens, and otherwise oppose drug/criminal activity. Apparently the site has been useful in providing information to police, and some arrests have resulted from the site. The man's body was found with a note reading "this is what happened to me for not understanding that I shouldn't report things on the social networks..." Nuevo Laredo is across the border from Laredo, Texas.
