Oregon Hunter Killed by Wounded Elk

Single Bull Elk with antlers in green grass.
Betty4240

Growing up in Montana, my dad taught me many lessons about hunting and wild animals. First, if your hunting day is pretty much over and you want to shoot a grouse with a 30-06, shoot it in the head. Second, if you have big game down, approach very carefully. As a kid I wanted to run up on my kill with so much excitement, but when my first buck tried to stand up as I approached, I suddenly understood what dad was talking about. A clean kill a always preferred by any hunter. That’s not always the case with high powered rifles, but it’s even harder for archery hunters. The hunter in the story below probably didn’t do anything wrong, it was just a freak accident that the elk’s antler caught him in such a fashion. So sad to hear this news and our thoughts go out to his family and friends.
