Pasco “Karens” Aim to Wipe Out Generous Woman’s Driveway Library
When I saw the story of a Pasco woman's love for books being targeted by her Homeowners Association, I knew I had to bring your attention to it. A former teacher set up a bookstand at her house during the pandemic.
While libraries were closed, neighbor kids were encouraged to "check out" books for reading enjoyment. The "Neighborhood Library" was a HUGE success and expanded.
However, recently Juanita de Luna received a letter from the Madison Park Homeowner's Association asking her to take down the library. Why are these Karens doing this?
Check out the story in detail from our partners at KEPR Action News.
Are you kidding?
How can someone's generosity be targeted like this? I understand that it's not "normal" to see books in a driveway. But, really, how bad can it be? Sharing books is a wonderful gift.
My love for reading
One trait I received from my mother, is a passion for reading. My mother is a voracious reader. While growing up, she always had her nose in a book. I remember what a treat it was when I got my first public library card. I felt so "grown-up" going to the Dakota County Book-Mobile. It made a stop every Tuesday night at Saint Patrick's Church on 72nd Street in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota. Since then, I've always carried a library card.
Memories of Reading
When I was young, I checked out "The Lorax" and it was always my favorite to read with my father. Years later, I would read the Dr. Seuss Classic at several National Read Across America Days. In fact, I read it so many times, a teacher friend of mine gifted me the book. It's one of my most prized possessions.
I remember, when I returned to the Tri-Cities during the pandemic, the libraries were closed. I was disappointed. I love the Richland Public Library. One day, while walking in my neighborhood, in Oak Park, I discovered a book cabinet in the park adjacent to a neighbor's back yard. I've checked out a few books and donated a few. It's a wonderful way to feel connected to the neighbors.
I hope the Association and Ms. de Luna will be able to compromise and keep the "Neighborhood Library." It's a shame if it has to go away. Think of all the joy it's provided.
