A 27-year-old man who's "familiar" to Pendleton authorities is in the Umatilla County Jail on assault charges after he allegedly assaulted another man in a city park bathroom.

The victim, who's name was not released, was walking towards Roy Raley Park Sunday afternoon when Amos Mitchell Burton approached him and asked him for a cigarette. The victim didn't know Burton, according to police.

The man ignored Burton, then later entered the men's bathroom in the park. Burton was seen on surveillance video following him in, where he knocked the man unconscious, stealing his wallet and backpack. Burton was seen on video leaving the room with the items.

He was located less than two hours later by police, and despite resisting arrest was subdued and taken into custody facing multiple felony assault charges. Officials say during treatment at an area hospital it was determined the victim suffered a fractured jaw in the attack.

Police said Burton is "familiar" police, alluding he's been in trouble before with the law.
