A fire Monday night at the apartment units at 1855 Wine Country Road in Prosser resulted in no injuries, but between 60-80 people being displaced.

Prosser and other fire crews responded around 6:20pm, as one of the units was on fire. Authorities believe the blaze began in a kitchen area. Although crews confined the fire to that one unit, excessive smoke in the area caused some damage and health issues, resulting in those other tenants having to leave.

The Red Cross set up emergency shelters for those people at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grandview, and say they can stay there until their units are either cleared for entry, or the people are able to make other arrangements.

Fire officials say Tuesday they will be going unit by unit to assess whether people can move back in, or if the smoke damage still poses a hazard, especially for breathing.
