Despite legislators raising gas tax nearly every session, drives are compensating with smarter driving, and more fuel efficient cars are actually lowering the gas tax revenue every year.

Not that long ago, voters shot down I-1631, the Carbon Tax bill. But this proposed new tax would add six more cents per gallon (19) than the Carbon Tax bill would have (13).

So much buzz has been surrounding the pilot plan starting soon in Washington state, where some 2,800 drivers will test out a DOT plan to charge motorists by the mile, instead of charging them a gas tax.

In early 2018, the Washington State Department of Transportation plans to test a pay-per-mile tax idea, which if implemented, would gradually be used to replace the gas tax in our state.

The public first began to hear about this idea last year. Now, the department of transportation is getting ready to test it.

Perhaps it's from the severe beating legislators are taking over continually raising the WA state gas tax, or another influence of a Governor who wants to his legacy to be that of the "greenest" in U.S. history. Either way, this idea is sure to meet resistance on the East side.

As part of the transportation package approved by the legislature this last session, the first of a series of gas tax raises will hit Saturday.

They've already kicked off a test program in Oregon, now it's creeping North.
