Despite legislators raising gas tax nearly every session, drives are compensating with smarter driving, and more fuel efficient cars
are actually lowering the gas tax revenue every year.
So much buzz has been surrounding the pilot plan starting soon in Washington state, where some 2,800 drivers will test out a DOT plan to charge motorists by the mile, instead of charging them a gas tax.
In early 2018, the Washington State Department of Transportation plans to test a pay-per-mile tax idea, which if implemented, would gradually be used to replace the gas tax in our state.
