17 of the Best Ideas for Saving Money

Some people just suck with money. Maybe no one ever taught them. An international survey asked people for their best money-saving tip. Here are the results:

  • See how many days you can go without spending a penny. Start playing as soon as you pay all your mandatory bills (rent/mortgage, utilities, grocery, etc)
  • When talking yourself out of buying something, ask yourself if you can afford to buy two. If you could, your budget can probably afford one. If you couldn’t afford two, then tell yourself you can’t afford one.
  • Get budgeting help (like an app) – I recommend “You Need a Budget
  • NEVER go to the grocery store hungry and always bring a list
  • When talking yourself out of buying something, force yourself to have a two-week “cooling off” period. This prevents impulse buying.
  • Stop eating out TOMORROW and then calculate the difference of how much you saved at the end of the month and put the difference in savings.
  • Quit smoking
  • Drink less beer
  • Start bringing sack lunches
  • “Rent” movies at the library instead Red Box
  • Carry around a really nice water bottle to help you cut back on buying water, soda and coffee
  • Make your own laundry soap (I’ve done this)
  • If you live near a grocery store that gives you a discount on gas, USE IT!
  • When you’re tempted to make an impulse buy, consider how many minutes of work that item is worth. Now is it worth it?
  • Have money automatically withdrawn from your paycheck to a separate savings account — whatever you can afford (2%, 10%, 20%)
  • If you give yourself a “play” or “beer” budget, get that in cash for your wallet. When it’s gone, it’s gone.
  • Keep your money in separate savings/checking accounts and only carry around one card. That way you have to transfer money if you run out. The inconvenience isn’t the end of the world, but will deter you a great deal.
