Librarians in the Sage Library System, which includes Umatilla, Hermiston, Pendleton, Milton-Freewater, say they're tired of replacing expensive books about black magic, Satanism and occult practices after patrons frequently steal them.

Pendleton's interim library director says theft books in this category has been a problem for two decades. She and her colleagues are sick of it and will no longer replace these books when found missing.

Pendleton has two books about tarot cards. The Sage Library System has 36 books total on that subject. The Milton-Freewater branch has a copy of the Satanic Bible.

Test preparation books and texts on mushroom hunting are also frequently-stolen titles.

Embarrassment over checking out books about the occult may account for some of the theft, Pendleton's director said.
