With the number of Hanford workers being evaluated for a variety of symptoms and potential ailments due to smelling odors and fumes in the Tank Farm area now at 33, Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson is considering new legal action vs. the federal government.
Regular routine checks and inspections of the waste tanks at Hanford have scientists wondering about a possible 2nd tank that might be leaking. It's tank AY-101, the second-oldest of the double-shell tanks, and dates back to about 1969.
AY-102 is causing a lot of controversy at Hanford. The leaking double-walled tank is not a hazard to the public according to the Department of Energy, but some former Hanford workers are calling it a "catastrophic" event.
A Federal judge has ok'd the continuation of a lawsuit filed against Washington Closure Hanford and other larger contractors and sub-contractors, over allegations they bid on contracts meant for smaller firms.
