Talk about making your WHL debut!

Tri-City Americans goalie Troy Trombley,  who had never won in the WHL, got his first career win Friday night with a stellar performance against the No. 1 team in the Western Conference of the Western Hockey League. In fact, Trombley had never started a game in the league until Friday!

Trombley was brought in to back up Luke Lee-Knight who was called up to replace standout goalie Eric Comrie after a season ending injury. Trombley turned away 41 Winterhawk shots! The Americans, after giving up one goal in the first, answered with six straight scores to hand Portland their sixth home loss of the season.

The 6’6″ giant from Sherwood Park, Alberta, is so new to the team they barely had time to add him to the website player roster. Trombley was briefly with the Everett Silvertips and Edmonton Oil Kings last season but did not play. His only career game came during the 2010-11 season when he played in one game for Kamloops!

The Americans suffered a tough loss when Comrie, considered perhaps the best goalie prospect in North America for his age, suffered a season-ending injury. Rather than try to play through it, surgery was the chosen option to allow him to return next year at full-strength. With the departure of Brendan Fiebelkorn earlier in the season, it’s up to Lee-Knight and Trombley to steer the Americans into the playoffs. But what a way to make your debut!

He stopped 41 of 42 Portland shots, and was 22 for 23 in a furious first period when Portland attacked him often. But he held the fort until the Americans could respond.
