Because parts of California are facing, and regularly face, water shortages, and for ease of maintenance, many citizens opt (as do those in AZ and other warm climates) for an artificial turf lawn.  Now, Glendale CA plans to force the people to rip them out.

Citing what they claim are chemical enviornmental issues, the city is forcing people with artificial turf or "face" lawns, to rip them out.  One resident said it would cost her nearly $3,000 to have hers replaced.   No word from city officials on whether backyards will be affected; nor have they said they will do with any athletic facilities that use....artificial turf.   City officials said those who refuse to comply with the statute will be criminally charged.
