Bateman Island Opens Today After Closed for One Year From Fire
After a long year of being closed to the public, Bateman Island opens again today!
The island was closed almost a year ago when a fire believed to be caused by people burned almost 70 percent of the surface. After the fire the island was closed because of the risk to pedestrians.
While the island was closed for the last year, city officials cut down the burned trees that could fall on people. They also removed some temporary structures from homeless camps made visible by the fire, according to reports.
Most of the foliage that burned a year ago has grown back and the island has returned to its natural state.
You can enter the island by crossing the causeway at Wye Park off Columbia Park Trail near the north end of Columbia Center Boulevard.
