The stalking carries a felony charge, also accused of perjury related to the incidents.

Robert Perales has been placed on administrative leave over the accusations, according to Granger Mayor Charles Wheaton.

The charges, coming from the Yakima County Prosecuting Attorney, stem from last summer. Perales is accused of providing false testimony in a Yakima County District Court hearing. It had to do with an ex-girlfriend of his who sought a protection order against him.

Officials close to the case say they are shocked, as is Sgt. Dave Leary, who will serve as interim chief. Perales is accused of felony stalking but specific details of those charges were not revealed, according to the Yakima Herald Newspaper. Officials did say however, that the charges indicate what was called "aggressively stalking" the woman.

More information is expected to be released soon.
