Drivers Beware of Spokane’s New Construction Zone Speed Camera

WSDOT will begin using a mobile speed camera in a Spokane construction zone soon.

First Time for Speed Cameras Used in a Construction Zone East of the Cascades

Repaving is happening between the Burlington Northern Railroad Bridge and Geiger Road this summer. Crews will be replacing broken and worn concrete. Crews will be working just feet away from passing traffic behind barriers and cones.

Naturally, Their Safety Is a HUGE Concern

To encourage drivers to slow down, the work zone speed camera will be on site as an added safety tool. The goal of the program is to encourage drivers to follow the speed limit in the work zone.

Enforcement will only take place when crews are working. The fine for a first time violation is $125, and $248 for repeat offenses.

In Washington State, speed zone cameras are used to enforce speed limits in various areas, including:

•  School speed zones
•  School walk zones
•  Hospital speed zones
•  Public park speed zones
•  Certain state highways within city limits that are classified as CITY streets
•  Additional HIGH-CRASH-RISK locations approved by local governments
•  ACTIVE roadway work zones (when workers are present)

I'm all for speed zone cameras! However, red-light cameras...NOT so much. Years ago, I was caught on a red-light camera. I was traveling through a high-volume intersection, when the camera caught me mid-bite into a fast-food burrito. That traffic citation cost me $600!
