Washington Wildfire Smoke Expected to Linger, Air Quality Worsening

Numerous wild fires in Washington have prompted an EMERGENCY state-wide burn ban until September 30th.

As of Monday, August 10th, an Air Quality Alert is in effect across a large part of eastern and central Washington due to the dangerous smoke. According to the U.S. Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program:

Moses Lake west to Ellensburg will continue to experience smoke impacts ranging from brief periods of MODERATE in the morning hours up to VERY UNHEALTHY by evening.

If you are unusually sensitive to air pollution, you may consider reducing your activity level or shorten your time outdoors.

Washington Department of Ecology Has Issued the Air Quality Alert

Wildfire smoke is the main concern, as fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can penetrate deep into the lungs. Some areas directly downwind of fires could reach VERY UNHEALTHY levels, while other areas could be unhealthy of sensitive groups.

Smoke Is Expected to Persist Through the Coming Week

The alert doesn't mean EVERY part of Washington has dangerous air at this moment. Conditions can vary dramatically from one town to the next. Department of Ecology recommends keeping windows and doors closed.
