Teachers and the Prosser School District had agreed to open school, and delay a potential strike until September 8th in an effort to give more time to reach a contract. But now, talks have broken off, and the District has requested mediation.

According to Superintendent Roy Tolcacher, talks broke down between the Prosser teachers and the District Wednesday night, and the District has requested a mediator to help.

According to the Washington Education Association, Prosser teachers are among the lowest paid in the state. While an agreement was reached on a number of supplemental issues, teacher salaries remain the big sticking point.

If no contract is finalized by September 7th, teachers have voted to go on strike September 8th.
