You knew this just wasn't going to go away.   Having been largely stopped in their demands to change the name of the NFL's Washington Redskins,  protest groups have now launched an attack on affiliate stations who carry the games.    These groups are launching petitions, asking the FCC to refuse to renew these station's broadcast licenses unless the name is changed, or they stop airing the contests!

These progessive, politically correct organizations are trying to use back-end pressure by attacking the stations themselves.  By applying pressure from the affiliate level, they are hoping to force owner Daniel Snyder and the NFL to change the name of the franchise.    Certain groups believe the name Redskins is culturally insensitive and racist.

Snyder has met with numerous Native American groups who don't have a problem with the name, and was even seen watching home games with Native American leaders in his owners box.   He has steadfastly refused to bow to the pressure.

A number of the affiliate stations who's licenses are up for renewal by the FCC (usually a standard formality) are being attacked.   These groups have filed petitions with the FCC, asking their licenses not be renewed.  A station who's license is NOT renewed has no choice but to "go dark,"  or turn off the transmitter and go off the air.

According to Inside Radio Wednesday, two more stations have come under attack:

"WWXX, Buckland, VA (94.3) is no longer the only station to be hit with a petition to deny a new license. Advocates looking to push the Washington Redskins to change its name have now filed a similar petition on Los Angeles Fox affiliate KTTV-TV and NBC O&O KNBC-TV. Unlike WWXX, which has direct ownership ties to Redskins owner Dan Synder, the L.A. television stations have no direct ties to the billionaire.  One of the three Native Americans who filed the KTTV protest is Pacifica Radio’s Larry Smith, who is a co-host of the weekly show “American Indian Airwaves” on KPFK, Los Angeles (90.7). George Washington University law professor John Banzhaf has led the charge and has said he’ll go after other radio and TV stations that “repetitively and unnecessarily” use the team’s name."

According to Inside Radio,  stations in Oregon, Alaska and Washington state who's licenses will be up for renewal in February are likely to be the next targets.

Yet another example of how progressive special interest groups will stop at nothing to achieve their agenda - regardless of the impact it may have on the situation, or the valid opinions of others including the "business" (in this case, team) owner.
