In a move that seems surprising for a city like Spokane, the South Hill Library -- which is part of the taxpayer-funded city library system -- is going to hold a "Drag Queen Story Hour."

June is Pride Month and there are some cities across the country that have, or will feature, similar events at libraries. The event will be targeted towards children between 3-8 years of age.

The event first began in San Francisco. According to the organizer's website, they had a statement posted about this and other such events. It says drag queens will read stories to children in libraries, schools and bookstores. They say these events capture the imagination of the "play of the gender fluidity of childhood," and give children "glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models."

Several protest groups have sprung up and plan to stage demonstrations at the library the day of, and perhaps in advance, of the event.

It is not known if public input was sought due to the nature of the event. To find out more about this story, click on the button below.
