The identity of the man has not yet been released, but he is 37, and from Washington.

Oregon authorities say very early Thursday, the suspect stole a vehicle that was left idling while the owner dropped off newspapers at the Pilot truck stop near Stanfield.  Approximately 4:13a.m. the auto theft was reported.  A Stanfield officer, while taking the report, saw the suspect driving the vehicle past the location.

Officer Mike Elwood of the Stanfield Police Department gave chase along Highway 207 after pursuing the suspect along a number of area roads towards Echo, OR.  The suspect driver failed to negotiate a corner and the vehicle left the road.  It traveled well over 100 feet into a farmer's field, rolled several times, ejecting the driver.

A Umatilla Police officer arrived to assist Officer Elwood, and they found the suspect dead at the scene.  His name is being withheld until family can be notified.
