So just why do dogs attack vacuum cleaners anyway?

Some of it has to do with the breed and temperament of your dog. More lively, active, aggressive dogs view it as a 'toy' or something to be played with. Others view it as a threat; something they must scare off and dominate (alpha dog syndrome). But oftentimes, it is because it's irritating to their ears. Not just the noise you and I hear from a loud powerful vacuum, but the ultra-high frequency waves. Dogs not only have far more sensitive noses, but also hearing. They can hear frequencies undetectable to the human ear. Many vacuums emit loud, ultrasonic high frequency noise and the barking is their attempt to make it stop. They don't know the vacuum is not a "living" creature. Some pet experts say there are variety of ways to expose your dog to the vacuum and train them to ignore or leave it alone but unless this is done in the puppy phase, it usually won't work with adult dogs. So, just sit back and enjoy watching them attack while you clean the floor!
