The 62-year-old suspect allegedly threatened to kill workers at a local business. Charles Hoffert is a former employee of the business. Yakima Police were called to the business at about 7:30 am after Hoffert called the business indicating that he was going to show up to the business and kill employees.
At about 11:30 Police located the dangerous man at his residence.
Police surrounded the residence in the 2200 block of Summitview Avenue. Police made several attempts to make contact with Hoffert by ordering him to exit the home. Hoffert was NOT compliant. He made hostile statements to the officers.
Hoffert was arrested in 2020 after firing a high-powered rifle at a power transformer. SWAT was also involved in that incident.
Because of Hoffert's history, the Yakima Crisis Response Unit was brought in to help. In a release from the Yakima Police Department:
Designated Crisis Responders and police negotiators attempted to de-escalate and engage in a peaceful surrender over the course of several hours, however, were not successful. After several hours of failed negotiations, police used chemical agents and a police canine to take the suspect into custody at 6:20 pm.
Hoffert is booked at the Yakima County Jail.
