Claiming the name Columbus Day was "hurtful" to Native Americans, the Bellingham City Council has voted to replace Columbus Day with another..

Monday night the council voted 6-0 to change the name to "Coast Salish Day" in honor of the Nooksak Indians who have populated the area for centuries.

Council member Roxanne Murphy, a Native American, said the Columbus Day name is "hurtful" to many Natives.   She was the proponent of the change, and said it was to "honor" the actions of neighbor Seattle, who changed theirs to "Indigenous People's Day."

Italian-Americans have protested in full-force, taking out a full page ad in the Seattle Times Newspaper, saying these officials and groups have disrespected Americans of Italian decent with extreme political correctness. Whoops!  Guess they didn't think that one through...but then again, with most of these types of movements,  the supporters usually don't.

We find it curious that after decades of it being known as Columbus Day, apparently all of a sudden,  certain groups of people have decided this is such a big issue they cannot carry on with their lives unless the name is changed.

Apparently Americans of European decent don't count.  If Bellingham chooses to honor actions of Seattle, they are in for a whole lot of issues.  Hope they don't decide to jump on the $15-per-hour minimum wage, either.
