After years of protests by the Nez Perce tribe, who claimed Columbus enslaved native populations on his visits to the New World, the Spokane City Council voted to instead observe Indigenous People's Day.

The vote was taken in August, and from now on, as far as the city is concerned with-official business-Columbus Day is gone.

City Council officials said the move was to salute Native American populations.  Officials say parking meters won't have to be fed Monday, but other city services such as garbage pickup and curbside recycling will take place.

The August vote to change the name was 6-1. No word if the school districts in the area plan to follow suit. Seattle was the first city in the state to change this holiday, they did so back in 2014.
