It appears George Orwell’s “1984″ predictions have come true.  The CIA now wants to spy on you through the internet connections on your television.

According to the new head of the CIA, former General David Patraeus,  all the new goodies we have in our homes will enable to CIA to “transform” the art of spying.  How is this possible?   Many of us have our televisions connected to the internet-Netflix anyone?-and these data streams, along with wi-fi, can be monitored and intercepted by spies.  According to part of the report from Wired’s Danger Room Internet Blog:

“Everything from remote controls to clock radios can now be controlled via apps – and chip company ARM recently unveiled low-powered, cheaper chips which will be used in everything from fridges and ovens to doorbells. The resultant chorus of ‘connected’ gadgets will be able to be read like a book – and even remote-controlled, according to CIA  Director David Petraeus. “

The report goes on to say that devices with signals or internet usage can be monitored, and the CIA wants to “read” this data as part of it’s surveillance programs.  More from the report in the London Daily Mail online:

Privacy groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation have warned of how information such as geolocation data can be misused – but as more and more devices connect, it’s clear that opportunities for surveillance will multiply.

Another question we had at Newstalk 870 is,  like numerous other significant stories before, why is this being featured in a British Newspaper–information about the CIA–and not in the “mainstream media?”
