For some 30 years, there's been an ordinance banning owning a pit bull inside the Yakima city limits. It appears it's going to stay.

Despite a growing number of citizens who are asking for the ban to be lifted, the city scrapped a plan to have the City Public Safety Committee review the policy.

The City Council voted there will be no further discussion of sending the ban to the committee for review.

Several groups who have been asking for the ban to be lifted said that's all they wanted, was at least for the committee to re-examine the ban to see if it's outdated.

City officials said if the ban were lifted, the growing population might lead to more attacks by the breed. The city also said it wants to address the growing number of stray animals in Yakima as well, which is becoming a nuisance and problem.
