The Columbia Cup is fun for fans of all ages, lots of activities and the air show and boats on the water. But unfortunately, local law enforcement officials say it can also bring more auto related thefts.

Through early August, police remind people to lock their vehicles, regardless of how long it will be left unattended. So, they're running the Lock It or Lose It campaign.

Kennewic police Sgt. Ken Lattin says the boat races always brings a rash of car thefts, not just in the park but around the region.  It's not a surprise, as the Tri-Cities sees thousands of visitors from out of town who come to watch the races.

But some also come here looking for unlocked vehicles. Also, with many people down on the river, police say make sure you securely lock your vehicles left behind at home, especially if you're in the park all day Saturday or Sunday.

They also say never leave anything of value in view of someone who looks in the windows. This even includes backpacks, said Lattin.  You might know it's empty or has nothing of value, but a potential thief doesn't know that.

The same goes for not leaving your vehicle running unattended, even for just a few minutes. Take some time to secure you vehicles and property before heading to the water to enjoy the HAPO Air Show and Columbia Cup.
