A masked man attempted to assault a Kennewick woman early Tuesday morning in her home, but with the help of her teenage son, the woman inside was able to thwart his attack.

Police said around 5am the woman opened the sliding door on their home in the 600 Block of South Kent to let in some fresh air, after which the man entered. The woman, whose husband had just left for work, was sitting with her four-year-old daughter in the room.

The man, dressed in black with a mask and black gloves, lunged at her with what appeared to be hunting knife. He pushed her down on a mattress that was in the room, but she was able to use her legs to kick him aside. Her teenage son then heard the commotion, and began to yell violently at him. The suspect, described as skinny and frail, perhaps five feet tall, fled the complex. He was last seen running towards the Northwest.

The suspect was wearing all black clothing, including the gloves and mask.  He had, according to the woman and teenage boy, a dark complexion from the skin around his eyes that showed through the mask.
