Hanford

A shocking surprise was discovered recently by about a dozen Franklin County farmers and other agricultural operations in the White Bluffs area.

According to this group,  power from the Columbia Generating Station at Hanford is not needed.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has ordered some modifications made to plants that are similar in design to those in Fukushima that melted down in Japan two years ago.

Sequestration and automatic budget cuts forced Hanford contractors to lay off 235 workers Monday.The job cuts were mostly union positions, but did include 27 non-union workers. Some jobs were saved due to union workers volunteering to take off time in an agreement proposed by the Hanford Atomic Metal Trades Council...

There is a proposal to ship three million gallons of waste to Carlsbad, New Mexico. This would reportedly give officials more flexibility to deal with six leaking tanks at Hanford. Some waste has already been sent there.

Hanford is now offering tours of the B Reactor and the current environmental cleanup site. The B Reactor was the world’s first full-scale nuclear reactor. It was here that the plutonium was produced for the “Fat Man” bomb dropped over Nagasaki, Japan in 1945...

Gov. Jay Inslee plans to tour the Hanford site to gather information about the six leaky tanks and others that could pose a significant problem down the road.

Gov. Jay Inslee raised eyebrows across the state and even the nation with his announcement this week that the six leaky storage tanks at Hanford could be oozing up to 1,000 gallons a year.
