Now that President Obama has opened the doors, so to speak, for millions of illegals to stay in the U.S.  scams are beginning to pop up all over the country, including Washington state.

According to Attorney General Bob Ferguson,  numerous reports have already been made about people posing as immigration experts or legal experts,  who claim they will refer people to immigration attorneys - but it never happens.

Ferguson said the scammers are taking advantage of a language similarity between two distinctly different titles in the U.S. and Latin America:

"In several Latin American countries, the term “notario público” refers to an individual who has received extensive legal training over the course of several years.     In the United States, a “notary public” is an individual who has the authority to administer an oath or affirmation or witness the signing of papers. No legal training is required to obtain this title.     Scammers use this linguistic similarity to deceive Spanish-speaking consumers into thinking that they are experts in immigration law. They then pocket fees, without providing proper assistance."

Ferguson also warned some of these scams promised to find the person a sponsor or get them a green card, but ended with the same results - the victim is out considerable sums of money, with no results.
