The Washington State Patrol says speed was the leading cause of a crash that destroyed a Richland man's Corvette early Thursday morning.

Troopers say 66-year-old Gene Baumgarner was Eastbound on the Bypass Highway near the Van Giesen Intersection when he lost control and crashed.

He was taken by ambulance to Kadlec Regional Medical center, but the extent of his injuries was not revealed. The car went in and out of a ditch before finally coming to a stop on Highway 240. Reports indicate the Corvette was completely destroyed, according to the Tri-City Herald.
