According to officials with the Red Cross of the Pacific Northwest, there's a significant blood shortage going on.

Regional Communications Manager Abby Lutz released information about the need for donors, and a new rewards program started to urge people to donate. Their information read in part:

"The American Red Cross continues to experience a severe blood shortage as the number of trauma cases, organ transplants and elective surgeries rise – and deplete the nation’s blood inventory. There is an emergency need for donors to give now to ensure blood is on hospital shelves when patients need it."

For those who donate between August 1-15th, they will automatically be entered for a chance to win an exclusive VIP trip for two persons to the sold-old 2021 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. This huge music and arts event will be taking place September 2-5 in Tennesee.

Donors who come in during this time will also receive a free four-month subscription to Apple Music (applies to new subscribers only).

These efforts are especially aimed at getting younger persons to donate blood and increase awareness for the need at medical facilities.

Over the last decade or so, blood donations have been met with significant competition from plasma donation centers, where people can get paid regular cash amounts (via a 'debit' style card) for donating plasma. Plasma is the straw-colored element in blood that helps a variety of bodily functions.
