At least 500 homes in Benton County are now safer after another round of smoke alarm giveaways and installs over the weekend by Benton County Deputies.

In the wake of a tragic fatal mobile home fire in Benton City earlier this summer where two children died, Deputies and Sheriff's Department personnel have been visiting various neighborhoods. They've been talking with homeowners, and helping them either maintain the smoke alarms they have or giving them free ones.

Officials have been especially working with mobile home parks, and this last weekend the Metz Mobile Home park in Kennewick. As of this effort, over 500 alarms have been handed out.

Deputies are going to continue the program through the fall. If you're in need of an alarm, you can contact the Benton County Sheriff's office at (509)-746-6555 or contact the American Red Cross.
