The Oregon State Patrol says 31-year-old Austin Monroe Herd fell out of the driver’s seat of his van because the door was held closed by a bungee chord!

Just after 9 p.m. Saturday night, the van was westbound on the interstate near Bonneville when he got into a physical fight with his girlfriend, 30-year-old Nicole Quintana.

During the altercation, Herd reportedly fell out of the driver’s door onto the pavement and was fatally injured.

Quintana was able to stop the van, but Herd was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers say the driver’s side door latch was broken and Herd was using a bungee chord to keep the door closed!

Both Quintana and another passenger were taken to a nearby hospital, treated and released.

It must have been a serious fight, because Quintana had sustained injuries troopers said were consistent with a fist fight.
