Benton County Deputies wrapped up a recent swing through mobile home parks in various areas, handing out smoke detectors and talking with homeowners and renters about the need for fire safety.

In the wake of that recent fatal fire that killed two children in Benton City, Deputies and Sheriff Jerry Hatcher went out door to door, talking with people, and handing out smoke alarms if the home did not have one.

Fire crews say the children would have had a much better chance of escaping had the alarm been working. In homes where alarms were not working Deputies showed the people how to properly maintain them, and in homes where there wasn't one, they gave them out for free with help in proper installation.

Benton County plans future such visits, in order to make mobile homes especially more safe. 340 mobile homes visited, 200 alarms handed out.
