Madison Bumgarner Leads Giants Over Pirates, 8-0
Brandon Crawford's grand slam backed the four-hit pitching of Madison Bumgarner, and the San Francisco Giants shut out the Pirates, 8-0, in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night in the National League wild-card game.
After both teams were held scoreless through three innings, Crawford smashed a grand slam off Edinson Volquez over the right field wall in the fourth. Bumgarner didn't need any further support as he struck out 10 Pirates while hurling a complete game masterpiece. The Giants tacked on four runs to account for the final score.
San Francisco advanced to face the Washington Nationals on Friday in Game 1 of the teams' National League Division Series. The Pirates ended their season. They advanced in the play-in game in 2013. Pittsburgh is the 1st. team in MLB History to qualify for the Wild Card twice, under the new format.
