Given that it's nearly 20 years old, and has more than served it's purpose, the Playground of Dreams is going to be going away in the future.

It's been the site of thousands of birthday parties, events, survived tens of thousands of people of all ages climbing all over it, and even an arson fire that in November 2003 caused extensive damage. But it was rebuilt.

Originally opened in 1999, and funded in part by huge penny drives conducted by most of the area elementary schools, the Playground is slated to be replaced by an even bigger and better facility.

According to KVEW-TV,  Kennewick officials are envisioning (and plans are starting to be drawn up) for an even bigger facility. They are seeking input from the community as to what they would like included.

The facility has been temporarily closed for a few weeks, so crews can perform maintenance. Officials told KVEW the biggest concern is nails and other fasteners that have worked loose over time, and are protruding. Once the facility has been worked over, it will re open.

According to reports, there's no firm timetable as to when a new facility could be built.

The City WANTS to hear from you, so call the Parks Department at (509)-585-4362 with your suggestions. Sorry, a tiki bar and hot tub are probably off the table.
