Authorities have not said, but it's likely the suspect could be facing a psychiatric evaluation.

32-year-old Joel-Cardenas Madrigal was booked into the Franklin County jail on felony charges of threatening to kill people and misdemeanor charges, as well as firearms charges after a Monday night incident at the Legacy Apartments on 24th Street  in Pasco.

Around 8pm police responded to the facility behind McDonald's on Court Street for a report of a man waving a gun and yelling from a balcony. Madrigal, said witnesses, allegedly fired a handgun into the air.

After a physical confrontation with police, who had tried to talk him out of the apartment, Madrigal was taken into custody. Authorities say he'd been contacted earlier in the weekend after witnesses said he was seen hitting objects with a hammer.

Officials did not say if drugs or alcohol were involved.
