Around 8:13am, Kennewick police responded to Highlands Middle School near 4th. Ave in Kennewick on a report of a potential weapons threat.

Police detained a 14-year-old suspect, but did not specifically say if the youth had a weapon. The school immediately went into lockdown.

Richland police were called in to help and were able to locate the suspect and he is in custody. Police said once he was detained there was no further threat.

Kennewick police remained at the school to assist with parents who may have come to the school to inquire about their children due to the lockdown.
